Mohamed Yassir Laalej

Mohamed Yassir Laalej is a PhD researcher in Aerodynamics and Bioinspiration at ENSEM Casablanca, within the LARIL Laboratory. His doctoral research focuses on the biomimetic and aerodynamic design of deployable wings for drones inspired by gliding mammals, combining morphological analysis, three-dimensional reconstruction, computational fluid dynamics, wind-tunnel experiments, and machine-learning-based optimization. He graduated first in his class with an engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from ENSAM Casablanca. His doctoral studies are supported by an Excellence Scholarship awarded by the Moroccan National Centre for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST). As part of his PhD, Yassir has undertaken research visits at the PMMH Laboratory and collaborated with the “Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle de Paris” to develop 3D reconstructions of taxidermy specimens of gliding mammals. He has also visited VIOLab, where he collaborated with Dr. Ahmet Gungor to conduct CFD simulations aimed at understanding the aerodynamic principles underlying the gliding flight of these species. His research aims to translate the flight mechanisms of gliding mammals into innovative, energy-efficient, and deployable aerial vehicle concepts.
